The Japanese government is set to lift evacuation orders in heavily contaminated areas around Fukushima. It will cut compensation and housing support to survivors, who are still struggling six years later.

In a 240-page report released on June 11, and downplayed by world media, the International Atomic Energy Agency concluded Japan lacked sufficient safeguards to prevent the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster.

The government approved a revised 30-to-40-year roadmap that delays by three years the start of a key initial step — the removal of still-radioactive fuel rods in the three reactors that had meltdowns following the March 2011 disaster in northeast Japan.
