Nestled in the mountainous district of East Singhbhum, this tiny dot on India’s vast map has become a virtual cancer ward for its residents, following years of dangerous radiation being emitted from uranium mines and tailing ponds in the area.
According to Members of Jharkhandi Organization against Radiation(JOAR) , On 20th, 21st and 22nd May, 2017 evening , at 3.50 pm, 4.00 pm, and 4.30 pm, the strong winds which accompanied the heavy storm lead the uranium waste of the 3rd Tailing Dam fall down near the farm and the drain which resulted in the toxicity and radioactivity of the uranium tailing dust spread towards the vast mass of Land.
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of reports about a study highlighting the leakage of radioactive and toxic waste from the country’s oldest and most important uranium mine at Jaduguda in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, amid the alleged government apathy.
Jharkahand high court in a suo moto action, issues orders re Jadugora Mines. asks the state owned Uranium Corporation of India Ltd to disclose radiation levels and the presence of any heavy metals in soil and water in a cluster of villages with reports of unusual numbers of deformed and sick children.
